There is nothing else quite like the Circus Smirkus ring.
This ring is where troupers learn that they are capable of more than they imagined. They learn to trust each other—and themselves.
This ring is where things that they once thought impossible become real.
The tent that surrounds the ring is an umbrella for all of us. It’s where kids watching from the edge of the ring see that the performers are also kids—just like them. And perhaps they think, “If those kids can do it, so can I…”
For me, that sense of possibility is what Smirkus is all about.
Trying to imagine the possibilities for this show began many months ago. But my favorite part of the entire creation process is that, after all these months, the coaches, the choreographer, the costumer, the composer, the technicians, all the production team, and most importantly, the troupers have now made it into something more than any one of us could have imagined alone.
That is the joy—and the power—of this collaborative process. This show now belongs to all of us.
It’s been an honor and ever so much fun, to add another chapter to the story that Rob Mermin started here in 1987. My thanks to the creative and production teams and all the people behind the scenes who make Smirkus the amazing place it continues to be. Thanks to the new generation of performers who will shepherd it forward. And thanks to you for joining us under the big top! We’ll hope to see you again down the road!
